Water for People’s Arsenic Mitigation Programme

Water for People launched the Arsenic Mitigation Programme to remove arsenic from drinking water in West Bengal by employing local resources and partnerships.

The Arsenic Mitigation Programme began in 1996. It employs wellhead filter units, using activated alumina as media, to remove arsenic from source water and to provide clean and safe drinking water. Today, over 175 wellhead filter units operate in six districts of West Bengal and benefits more than 35,000 people.

Water for People depends on community involvement and partner organizations for operations, making use of local knowledge and resources. The programme works on a revenue generating model to ensure sustainability. Furthermore, a holistic approach is taken to develop remote villages through arsenic removal initiatives complemented by other water and sanitation programmes.
